Graduation Awareness Week
The week of September 7-13, 2008 is slated to be Graduation Awareness Week in North Carolina.  A proclamation by Governor Mike Easley will be read.  
 
TCS Teacher Attends Holocaust Seminar
Rosman High Teacher Stacie Dotson has been selected by NCCAT to attend the “Becoming Witnesses” Holocaust Seminar in Germany and Poland. The dates are August 1-11. While abroad, she and others will blog about the sites visited on the NCCAT sponsored website www.becomingwitnesses.com.
 
State Funding For Plant Operations
House Bill 2436 authorized the State Board of Education to allocate state funds to support the Plant Operation Section. This means they will no longer be receipt supported, and that will enable DPI to provide service for the entire state. Furthermore, they will be refunding those LEA’s that have paid for the services for FY2008-2009. 
 
High School Students Enrolled at BRCC
Two-hundred four students registered for 406 courses with Blue Ridge Community College.  This represents an increase over last year of 148 students in 304 courses.

At the June 2 meeting, Architect Doug Harris and members of the Transylvania County Schools Art & Design Gallery Committee presented the new design for the student art gallery. Mr. Rogers had concerns about the hardy panel siding that was proposed for the exterior walls of the building. Mr. Harris offered to research other materials and present options to the Board within 4-6 weeks. 
 
Mr. Harris will present his findings and a recommendation for the exterior wall material for the gallery. A motion is in order to approve the exterior wall finish.

The NCHSAA requires local boards to grant permission to employ non-faculty individuals as head coaches of varsity or junior varsity teams. As a general practice, the Transylvania County Board of Education approves all volunteer and contract coaches for Transylvania County Schools. John Tinsley will request approval of the following coaches for 2008-2009 fall sports. Additional names may be presented at future meetings.

Norris Barger will present a petition requesting annexation of the Gillespie Circle property into the City of Brevard in order to access city water/sewer. The petition is attached.

At the May 19 meeting, Norris Barger presented an offer from Rosman resident, Tommy Clayton, to purchase and harvest timber on approximately five acres of Live Project property above Rosman High School. Board members requested more information on the value of the timber. Mr. Barger will present an update and make a recommendation on the offer.
