NOAA Visits PFES
In January, second graders at Pisgah Forest Elementary School enjoyed a weather presentation from Greg Hammer, meteorologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).  Mr. Hammer shared facts about severe weather, ocean currents, temperature readings and much more.   Students were shown different weather instruments, including a weather balloon and a weather clock.   One big highlight was a replica of the largest piece of hail to ever fall in the United States. Students and teachers would like to thank Mr. Hammer for visiting their school and providing a fun afternoon of learning.

National Geographic Bee
On January 14, BMS eighth grader Matthew Sharpsteen was the winner of the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee for the third year in a row.  The next step for Matthew and other school-level winners across the country will be to take a written test on their geography knowledge. The top 100 scorers on the written test in each state will be eligible to compete in their state’s Bee. Matthew has qualified for the state competition for the past two years. This year’s North Carolina Bee will be held on April 4, 2013 in Charlotte.

RES Students Learn About Wildlife
Recently members of the NC Wildlife Resource Commission spent the day with Rosman Elementary School students helping them learn about area wildlife and lifetime activities.  During their normal PE class, students participated in wildlife and outdoors sports including casting, archery, and fish and wildlife identification.  Students also got hands-on experience trying to identify North Carolina wildlife by exploring fur, skin, skulls, scat and tracks.

All-District Band
In January, fifteen Brevard High School students were selected to the All-District Bands. The students auditioned against hundreds of other band members from across Western North Carolina to earn this honor.  The students with an asterisk (*) placed high enough to audition for the All-State Band in March.

RHS Sweetheart Ball
Despite being out of school for 3½ snow days, approximately 180 Rosman High School students braved the lingering icy conditions to attend the 2014 Sweetheart Ball that was held on Saturday, February 1, in the Virginia Boone Building at the WNC Ag Center. The annual dance for grades 9-12 was sponsored by the RHS Student Council.  This year’s theme was a masquerade ball.  The student council members and advisors Linda Peeples and Shannon Patton would like to thank the administrators, chaperones, vendors, decorating committee and attendees who helped make the evening a success. The Sweetheart Court winners for 2014 are listed below:

3rd Runner Up:  Falyn McDonald
2nd Runner Up:  Lexi Aiken
1st Runner Up:  Candace Petit

February is Black History Month
The month of February is recognized as “Black History Month” nationwide.  Classes throughout the Transylvania County Schools will have activities commemorating the important people, places and events of the Civil Rights movement and the contributions and achievements of celebrated African Americans.

School Bus Driver Appreciation Week
The week of February 10-14, 2014 is “School Bus Driver Appreciation Week” in North Carolina.  Attached is a proclamation from Governor Pat McCrory that encourages citizens to Love the Bus and to recognize the excellence of our state’s school bus drivers and their good record of safety.

BMS Hosts Holocaust Speaker
Brevard Middle School recently hosted Mr. Walter Ziffer, a Holocaust survivor, to speak to eighth grade students about his life during one of the darkest times in history.  Teacher Kelly Muse has organized a trip to Washington, DC for eighth graders with the focus being a visit to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

BHS Yearbook Honored
Jostens, one of the largest yearbook companies in the nation, publishes an annual “Look Book” that showcases the best yearbook spreads from schools all over the country. Last year’s coverage of the BHS track team in the 2013 Brevardier has been selected for this prestigious honor, and folks from all parts of the country will see the Brevard High School yearbook as a standard for others. Congratulations to the BHS yearbook staff!

BHS Most Improved Students
On February 6, Brevard High School recognized 38 young men and women as being the "Most Improved Students" from the first semester.  Each teacher chose a student who had shown marked improvement in their class in the areas of attendance, attitude, turning in work, quality of work, overall average, etc.  Students and their families were invited to the award ceremony, but did not know which teacher had nominated them until the actual presentation of certificates. The “most improved” students are listed below:

Meals on Wheels Food Drive
The 9th Annual Meals on Wheels Food Drive will be held in the Transylvania County Schools during March and April. Donations collected at the schools will be distributed to the local Sharing House and Bread of Life programs. Meals on Wheels will award $100 to the school that has the largest per student donations. Mr. Al Mercer, coordinator, reports that the number of people in our community who are served by Sharing House and Bread of Life has increased dramatically in recent years, at a time when individual donations have decreased. These programs depend on events like the school food drives to replenish their supplies throughout the year. The top-finishing schools from the 2013 food drive are show below:

Earlier this fall, the NCSBA Board of Directors created the North Carolina School Boards Action Center (NCSBAC), a new 501(c)(4) organization that is designed to strengthen local school board advocacy efforts.  A memorandum from NCSBA Board President, Evelyn Bulluck, and NCSBAC President, Tim Morgan, describing the organization and its goals is attached.  A contribution statement for the 2013-2014 school year is also attached.  The Board may discuss whether it wishes to join the NCSBAC and authorize the payment of dues.
