N.C.G.S. § 115C-51 states that the local board of education shall provide at least one period for public comment per month at a regular meeting of the board. A sign-up sheet is available for public comment. A maximum of 30 minutes will be allotted for public comment at the beginning of the meeting and at the end of the meeting. Speakers will be asked to limit their comments to 5 minutes each, except in the event there are more than six speakers per session, at which time the chairman may limit the time allotted to 3-5 minutes per speaker. Speakers will be asked to refrain from discussing specific individuals by name in accordance with the North Carolina Open Meetings Law. No solicitations will be allowed during public comment.

Teaching Fellows Discovery Bus Tour
On May 17, a group of North Carolina Teaching Fellows from universities across the state visited Transylvania County as a part of their Discovery Bus Tour. Dr. David Sutton, Dr. Jeff McDaris, and Dr. Scott Elliott greeted the Fellows at the Rogow Room. Following Dr. McDaris’ presentation, the group toured Brevard Elementary School to learn about programs and services available to students there. The group traveled next to Brevard High School, where the Fellows were treated to presentations about TIME science, visual arts, and agriculture education by BHS students. After lunch at Brevard High School, the group finished their day by visiting the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education, where they enjoyed learning about some our county’s unique natural resources.
NC LASER Grant
Transylvania County Schools has received a Golden Leaf LASER Grant for Science in grades 4-8. The grant is in partnership with WRESA and five other school systems. TCS is forming a team to attend a weeklong training institute to be held on July 22-27 at the Doubletree Biltmore in Asheville. Team members include Amanda Griffin (RMS), Lisa Smith (BMS), Dusty Morgan (RMS), Cheryl Smith (PFES), Bob Dinsdale (PFES), and Dr. Kim Elliott. Mrs. Fox and Mrs. Petit have been invited to participate as well.
American Society for Microbiology Awards
Founded in 1899, the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) is the largest single life science membership organization in the world. Members worldwide represent 26 disciples of microbiological specializations plus a division for microbiology educators. The ASM awards honor the most outstanding microbiology projects. Meredith Tooley, Erika Williams and Kris Petterson from Brevard High School won a first place ASM award of $2,500 for their project, Isolation, Identification and Characterization of Endophytes from Cherokee Medicinal Plants: Yellowroot, Downy Rattlesnake Plantain, and Indian Tobacco. Sarah Johnson won a fifth place award of $500 for her project, Anti-Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis Bacterial Symbionts on Aneides aeneus Epidermal Tissue. Jennifer Williams is their teacher.
29th Annual Scholars Evening
On May 23, approximately130 students from Brevard High School and Rosman High School were named as Transylvania County Scholars at the 29th Annual Scholars Recognition Evening. Twenty-nine teachers were named as Memorable Educators by the senior scholars. In addition, the following scholarship winners for 2012 were announced:

RHS Scholarship Awards for 2012
As of the date of this writing, members of the Rosman High School Class of 2012 have been awarded over $75,500 in total college scholarships. Brevard High School will announce its scholarship awards at a school assembly on May 23.

The Board of Education would like to recognize former students from Brevard High School, Rosman High School, and Davidson River School who are currently serving or have previously served in the U.S. Military. In honor of Memorial Day, the Board will read the attached list of names aloud. One new name, Steven Robert Owen, has been added to the list. Additional names will be included as they are received.

Dr. Scott Elliott and Dr. Kim Elliott will present the student handbooks for 2012-2013.
· The four elementary schools have developed a uniform handbook. Each elementary handbook will have its own school-specific cover page, mission statement, vision statement, and belief statement, as well as specific transportation/parking/traffic instructions. These sections are highlighted in yellow in the attached handbook. Dr. Kim Elliott will answer any questions you may have.
· There are no changes to the middle school handbooks.
· The high school handbooks are also uniform in format, with minor changes. The handbooks will be available in electronic format. Dr. Scott Elliott will review the handbook and answer any questions. He will also request the Board’s input on the matter of obtaining parent signatures for the handbooks and other electronic documents.
Approval of the 2012-2013 handbooks will be requested at the next regular meeting.

Dr. Scott Elliott will give a summary of the goals and objectives in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Plan for 2012-2013. A description of the Local Planning System (LPS), which serves as the school system’s guide to CTE operation and performance, is attached. The full strategic plan and performance results may be viewed online at http://ctelps.dpi.state.nc.us. Enter username guest and password guest. Approval of the CTE plan will be requested at the next regular meeting.

Norris Barger will be available to discuss any new budget information or updates that have been received since the last meeting. The Board of Education’s budget request for 2012-2013 was submitted to the County Manager on May 9.
At the last meeting, the Board had discussed the possibility of having a joint meeting on June 4. Dr. McDaris will make a recommendation for the format of the June 4 business meeting in the event that the commissioners agree to a joint meeting on that date.
