Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam Grant
Brevard High School teachers Matthew Tuckey (Physical Science) and Rebecca Walkup (Math) received the prestigious Excite Award from the Lemelson-MIT Program. Mr. Tuckey and Ms. Walkup have been invited to refine and resubmit their application for the final round of the InvenTeam Grant competition. If selected, Brevard High School will receive funding to support a student team in designing and building an innovative technology solution to address a real-world problem. Through the grant, Brevard High School students would identify a challenge, develop a prototype, and test their solution. At the end of the 2025-2026 school year, the team would travel to MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts to participate in EurekaFest, which is a national event at which student teams present their inventions and connect with other young innovators. Please join us in congratulating Mr. Tuckey and Ms. Walkup for this very impressive honor.
2025 Free Summer Meals Program
Beginning the week of June 9, 2025, and continuing through August 14, 2025, Transylvania County Schools will again provide its Summer Food Service Program. Two meal pick-up sites will be available, with one at Pisgah Forest Elementary School and the other at Champion Park Pool in Rosman. From noon (12:00 p.m.) until 2:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, each site will provide a hot lunch and a breakfast for the next day. On Thursdays, weekend breakfast and lunch meals will be provided. Meals are free to all children of Transylvania County under the age of 18. Children do not have to qualify for free or reduced lunch to participate, and they do not have to attend Transylvania County Schools. We request that each family limit itself to just one of the two sites daily. In addition to the foregoing, the Department of School Nutrition Services is providing meals to 14 other summer program sites in the County between June 9, 2025, and August 22, 2025. Transylvania County Schools Track Teams
Both Brevard and Rosman High Schools’ track teams traveled to Greensboro for State Track meets in May. RHS senior Makynna McDonald came in third place in the 1A girls state championship long jump with an impressive 17’ 3” jump. The BHS girls 4x800 relay team came in 8th place in the 2A state meet. The BHS boys team finished with their best ever finish as runner up for the NCHSAA 2A team title! They had the following stats: 4x800, 3rd overall with a new school record; 4x100, 2nd overall; 4x400, 2nd overall with a new school record; Braylon Thompson placed 7th in the 100m and 200m dash; Eli Griffin placed 4th in the 100m dash; Avan Hinkle placed 3rd in the 1600 and 3200m; Keaton Campbell placed 4th in the 1600 and 3200m; Leo Murray placed 2nd in the 800m; and Ezra Stubbs placed 5th in the 800m. The following students were recognized as All State athletes: Sebastian Duncan, Silvan Guidry, Leo Murray, Ezra Stubbs, Avan Hinkle, Keaton Campbell, and Braylon Thompson. Additionally, Leo Murray received the 2025 2A NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award. We congratulate the coaches and the team members for their successful seasons.
Congratulations, Class of 2025!
The Class of 2025 celebrated the culmination of their K-12 educational careers with family and friends in three commencement ceremonies held at the Brevard Music Center earlier this month. Davidson River School held its ceremony on June 5th, followed by Brevard High School on June 6, and ending with Rosman High School on June 7.
