Educators of the Year 2021-2022
On May 6, Transylvania County Schools held a livestream ceremony to announce the district Teacher of the Year (TOY) and district Teacher Assistant of the Year (TAOY) for 2021-2022 and celebrate the school-level TOYs and TAOYs and Principal, Rookie, Student Support, and Media/Technology Persons of the Year. Due to the limit on indoor gatherings at that time, it was not feasible to hold this ceremony in person, but we look forward to celebrating in person again next year. Our thanks to Kevin Smith for coordinating the “prize patrols” held earlier this spring, the district TOY and TAOY interviews, and the livestream ceremony. We also thank Amber Webb and First Citizens Bank, which sponsors our TOY award each year. Please join us in recognizing the outstanding educators who were selected as the “best of the best” for 2021-2022:

NCSPRA Board Appointments
Congratulations to Transylvania County Schools-Community Relations Coordinator, Kevin Smith, who was appointed as State Coordinator for the North Carolina School Public Relations Association by the NCSPRA Board of Directors on May 4. Good job, Mr. Smith!
Tubist Earns Coveted All-State Band Chair
Brevard High School ninth-grader Trevor Long broke through during an already exceptional year to earn a seat in the 9th-10th Grade All-State Honors Band. Band director Jim Leatherwood said that earning fourth-chair tuba at the state level during his first year of high school sets Trevor apart, noting that freshmen “are competing not only with other ninth-grade musicians, but also with more experienced tenth-graders across the state.” Trevor plays in the BHS Blue Devil Marching Band and is also principal tubist in the Brevard High School Wind Ensemble. In place of the annual clinic held in May at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, students who qualified for the 2021 NC All-State Honors Band participated in a virtual masterclass with the North Carolina Symphony on Friday, April 23. Congratulations, Trevor!
National Police Week, May 9-15, 2021
During the week of May 15 each year, National Police Week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America's law enforcement community. We thank Sheriff David Mahoney, the Transylvania County Sheriff's Office, and our School Resource Officers for all they do every day, along with our state and local law enforcement partners who help to build strong community relationships and keep our schools safe and secure.
2021 Arby’s Inspirational Student
Brevard High School student Cassidee Cali has been selected as one of the Arby’s Inspirational Students for 2021. Cassidee will receive a $1,000 scholarship to the college of her choice this fall. She will also be featured on WLOS/WYMA on-air, digital platforms, and social media. Congratulations, Cassidee, on your achievement!
Scholarship Winners, TC Scholars, Junior Marshals, and NTHS
Congratulations to all of our scholarship recipients, TC Scholars, Junior Marshals, and National Technical Honor Society inductees for the 2020-2021 school year. See the attached document for a full list of names. We are proud of your hard work and accomplishments!
