BE IT RESOLVED by the Transylvania County Board of Education that recognition, thanks, commendation and congratulations be expressed to the persons named:
 
25 Years
The following staff members have achieved 25 years of service with the Transylvania County Schools. They will receive 25-year pins from the Board.

Media Specialist of the Year
The Media Specialist of the Year for 2008-2009 will be announced at the meeting. He/she will receive a $500 award from the Board. 
 
Counselor of the Year
The Counselor of the Year for 2008-2009 will be announced at the meeting. He/she will receive a $500 award from the Board. 
 
Rookie of the Year
Each year one new teacher is selected as the Rookie of the Year. He/she receives a $200 award from the Board. The Rookie of the Year for 2008-2009 will be announced at the meeting.
 
Principal of the Year
The Principal of the Year for 2008-2009 will be announced at the meeting. He/she will receive a $500 award from the Board.
 
Teacher Assistant of the Year
The following individuals were named Teacher Assistants of the Year by their schools. Each school-level Teacher Assistant of the Year receives a $200 award from the Board. In addition, the district-level Teacher Assistant of the Year receives a $500 award from the Board. The district Teacher Assistant of the Year for 2008-2009 will be announced at the meeting.

Teacher of the Year
The following individuals were named Teacher of the Year by their schools. Each school-level Teacher of the Year receives a $500 award from the Board. In addition, the district-level Teacher of the Year will be awarded $1,000 and a crystal apple by Wachovia Bank. The district Teacher of the Year for 2008-2009 will be announced at the meeting.

ExxonMobil Grant
The ExxonMobil Corporation has generously contributed $5,000 to seven Western North Carolina counties through a math and technology grant. Cherokee, Henderson, Madison, Polk, Swain, Transylvania and Yancey Counties will share in the grant that will be used to purchase equipment to strengthen students’ mathematical understanding through the use of integrated technology.
 
BMS Science Fair Project Goes to National Competition
Erika Williams’ and Jody Bettencourt’s Science Fair project has been selected to go on to the 2008 National Middle School Science Competition. Three hundred semi-finalists were selected from 1,943 entrants across the United States and Puerto Rico. On September 17, thirty national finalists will be announced from the 300 semifinalists. Those 30 will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, DC for a four-day event where they will compete for over $40,000 in scholarships. The top 10 winners will be announced on October 22. Good luck, Erika and Jody!
 
Math Teacher of the Year
Mellissa Howell has been named Math Teacher of the Year for Transylvania County Schools. She will be honored at the state math conference in Greensboro in October.

At its retreat in February, the Board discussed the idea of requiring a four-course concentration for graduation. Dr. Scott Elliott and Dr. Jeff McDaris have been working to identify possible concentrations that would represent a quality sequence of coursework. They will share with you what these concentrations might look like.
