RMS Student Takes Third Place in State Marketing
Baylee Bagwell, RMS eighth grader, won third place in the state and a $75 prize for her entry in the NC Council for Economic Education Marketing Competition. There were over 300 entries. Students must develop a PowerPoint presentation of 5-10 slides designed to convince companies to relocate or expand to an assigned North Carolina county. Baylee’s county was Chatham. The marketing contest is an extension of the middle school standards for social studies (economics), technology and language arts. Tammy Hall is Baylee’s teacher. Baylee and her parents are invited to attend a presentation dinner on May 13.

RHS Student to Study Arabic in Egypt
Rosman High senior, Nicole McGaha, has been awarded a National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarship to study Arabic in Egypt during the fall semester of 2009. The program is sponsored and administered by the U.S. State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Nicole applied earlier this year after reading about the program in the Asheville Citizen-Times.

National Teacher Appreciation Week
The week of May 3-9, 2009 is recognized as National Teacher Appreciation Week. School organizations will have activities throughout the week to honor and thank teachers for all that they do. The TCAE “Friends of Education” banquet will be held on May 5, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at Glen Cannon Country Club.

School Bus Driver Appreciation Week
The week of May 4-8, 2009 is recognized as School Bus Driver Appreciation Week in North Carolina. We honor and thank our dedicated drivers who safely transport children to and from their schools each day. The Transylvania County Schools Bus Driver Appreciation Banquet will be scheduled this spring.

School Technology Plan
The Department of Public Instruction has approved the TCS School Technology Plan for 2009-2013. The approval qualifies the school district for School Technology Trust Fund monies, NCLB Enhancing Education Through Technology grant dollars, E-rate discounts, and other public and private grants. The completion of this plan represents a great deal of hard work on the part of the district technology team--teachers, media, and technology staff. Well done!

Outstanding County Program Award
The Transylvania County FluMist Campaign, a local partnership between the school system and the County Health Department, was recognized recently as one of the 2008 Outstanding County Programs by the NC Association of County Commissioners. Below is the complete list of 2008 award winners:

1.                  Burke County – Cistern Project
2.                  Craven County – Joint Wide Area Network Project
3.                  McDowell County – Therapeutic Hypothermia
4.                  Pitt County – Shingle Recycling
5.                  Forsyth County – Training and Mentoring Program
6.                  Pender County – Mobile Dental Clinic “Forever Smiles”
7.                  Transylvania County – FluMist Campaign

Feinstein Challenge Winner

Rosman Elementary School is this year’s winner in the Feinstein Challenge. The $100 award is based on the ratio of students to items donated. The school district as a whole contributed 5,121 staple food items that Meals on Wheels collected and delivered to Sharing House. The Brevard High items were especially designated for the Spanish speaking community and will be distributed there. In return for the food collected for distribution, Meals on Wheels will receive approximately $5,121 for their program from the Feinstein Foundation.

As a cost savings measure, the Plant Operations department would like to standardize bathroom fixtures so as not to have to stock so many parts at the shop. In order to specify a particular manufacturer, it will be necessary to list minimum specifications in the base bid and then an alternate for the particular manufacturer in order to meet state statutes. Board approval is required to do this. Mr. Barger will discuss the specifications for the BHS bathroom project and make a recommendation for approval. A list of fixture designations is attached. The same fixtures would be specified for future bathroom renovations.

A motion is in order to approve recommendations for the BHS bathroom fixtures.
