TCS Bus Photo Wins Award
Our Transportation Department consistently earns great praise for their mechanics, drivers, and high performance.  And recently, they won a $100 award in a national photography contest in School Bus Fleet Magazine.  A spur-of-the moment shot, taken by Kevin Smith, captured the reflection of Brevard High School’s American flag in the bus window one sunny October afternoon last year, moments before students boarded the bus (see attached photo).

2018 New Employee Orientation
An orientation session for 23 new licensed employees was held on Thursday, August 16 at Blue Ridge Community College.  Presenters were Brian Weaver, Jeremy Gibbs, Tom Sweet, Kevin Smith, Alan Justice, Greg Stroup, and Sheriff David Mahoney.  Topics included the NC Code of Ethics for Educators, curriculum, community relations, NC Educator Evaluation System, beginning teacher support program, and the school resource officer program.  Principals Audrey Reneau, Scott Strickler, and Bryan Abernethy discussed expectations for staff at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

Board Member Appointed to NCSBA Legislative Committee
Congratulations to Mr. Marty Griffin, who has been appointed to serve on the North Carolina School Boards Association Legislative Committee as the Western Region member-at-large.  Ten board members from across the state were selected to serve on the committee.  The group will begin work on developing a two-year legislative agenda for the NCSBA Delegate Assembly at its first meeting on August 27 at the NCSBA office building in Raleigh.

Safety Training Programs
On August 9-10, school administrators joined law enforcement and first responders in training for best practices during a variety of “active shooter” events.  On August 15, Blue Spear Solutions, the nation’s leading training organization in active shooter and mass casualty preparedness, administered training to over 300 teachers, coaches, administrators, SROs, and staff members in the “Stop the Bleed” pilot program announced earlier this year.  In addition to the training, each classroom will receive a wall-mountable bleeding control station.  The stations will include tourniquets, hemostatic gauzes, chest seals, and other life-saving equipment, plus instructions in both Spanish and English.  To date over 150,000 civilians have been trained under this program.  Transylvania County Schools is the first school system to initiate this program in the State of North Carolina.
