BHS Alumnus Honored for Thesis on Appalachian Stereotypes
Gardner-Webb senior history major (and 2012 graduate of Brevard High School), Elisabeth Moore, recently won a prestigious award at the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference in Chicago for her thesis on the stereotypes of Appalachia.   Born and raised in Brevard, Moore first realized how the stereotypes about Appalachian life had permeated contemporary culture while attending the All-State Honors Band in Chapel Hill.  There she remembers a girl asking her how she overcame the obstacles from growing up in Brevard.  That got her thinking about the “moonshine-drinking, banjo-playing hillbilly” stereotypes, and she later decided to aim her college thesis on the ways these stereotypes are incorrect.  For example, not all early mountaineers were Anglo-Saxon.  There were African-Americans, Native Americans, and Chinese in Appalachia during the 1880s.  Another common view was that all mountaineers were poor, isolated farmers.  In fact, there was a very potent merchant class that participated in international trade with France and England during that era.  While conducting her research, Elisabeth spent some time at the Central Office poring over decades worth of old school board minutes.  Our congratulations and thanks go to Elisabeth for her award-winning and insightful work!
