Liam will also showcase his musical talent by giving a violin performance at the opening.
DRS Students Compete to Feed the Needy
Classes at Davidson River School have been competing as teams to answer questions online at the website freerice.com, where teams can register and answer questions in different academic areas such as Math, Science, Geography, Art, English, Literature, and Foreign Language. For every question that is answered correctly, rice is donated to families in need around the globe through the World Food Bank. As of May 13, 2013, Davidson River has donated 261,790 grains to the World Food Bank. This means that DRS students have fed 18 families in third world countries in just two months.

After-Prom Lock-In Sets Record Attendance
The annual Rosman High School after-prom lock-in set a new attendance record this year, with 181 students and 32 chaperones attending the all night event held in the Boshamer Gym at Brevard College. Organized by School Resource Officer Greg Stroup and teacher Julie Queen, the lock-in provides a positive alternative to dangerous decisions on prom night. The evening offered activities, games, food, DVDs, and drawings for prizes. Students consumed eight pounds of candy, 45 Jets’ pizzas, 200 biscuits from McDonald’s and 26 cases of drinks. They also played basketball, dodgeball, ping-pong, pool, Wii games, and watched three movies. Some even managed to get a little sleep. Every student received a t-shirt and a door prize, and five lucky students won drawings for a mini-fridge, a Garmin GPS, a TV, a tablet, and tickets to the Blue Man Group. Senior Kaitlyn Owen took home the big prize of the night, a kayak. Over $6,000 in funding and prizes were donated by local businesses, organizations and individuals. Over the last 12 years, nearly 2000 students have attended the after-prom lock-ins.
RHS Blood Drive
The Rosman High School blood drive on May 13 collected 71 units of blood for the Transylvania Red Cross, with 40 donors signed up. Teacher Tammy Moman was thrilled with the turnout, and the Red Cross staff staid, “This is the best school we have been to all week—these country students are awesome.”
Student Trip to India
Maddy Cook, a sophomore at BHS, is heading to India this summer as a foreign exchange student through the Rotary International Youth Exchange. Most of the funds for her trip have been generously donated from the Brevard and Pisgah Forest Rotary Clubs, local businesses and individuals. Maddy is hoping to raise the rest of the money that she needs by working odd jobs such as babysitting, house sitting, yard work, etc. If you would like to hire Maddy for a job or help support her trip, please contact her at 15mcook@s.tcsnc.org or through the Brevard High School Interact Club.
