A sign-up sheet is available for public comment. A maximum of 30 minutes will be allotted for public comment at the beginning of the meeting and at the end of the meeting. Speakers will be asked to limit their comments to 5 minutes each, except in the event there are more than six speakers per session, at which time the chairman may limit the time allotted to 3-5 minutes per speaker. Speakers will be asked to refrain from discussing any individuals by name in accordance with the North Carolina Open Meetings Law.

CNA Achievement
On May 31, nine students from Trina Hendrick’s Health Occupations class at BHS took the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam, and all nine students passed. One more student is scheduled to take the exam in June. This achievement is another example of the excellent real-world preparation being provided to students through the Transylvania CTE programs.
Meals for Haiti
In May, two Brevard High School students, Marielle DeJong and Gabbie Hoekstra, organized a “Meals for Haiti” event to help with earthquake recovery efforts. In cooperation with the Raleigh-based Stop Hunger Now organization, over 100 volunteers gathered at BHS and assembled, packaged and boxed 10,000 meals. Marielle and Gabbie also solicited financial assistance from local businesses to help cover the cost of the meals ($0.25 each).
Lillian Cothran Golden Apple Award
On June 4, Jane Reese, RMS/RHS Bookkeeper, was named the 2010 recipient of the “Lillian Cothran Golden Apple Award.” Jane has worked at RMHS for 43 years. Although she officially retired six years ago, she is still a permanent fixture at the school and in the community. One student described her as “the most under-appreciated, but most important person in the school.” The Cothran award is named for former RHS science teacher, Lillian Cothran, whose 39-year career exemplified outstanding dedication to her students and community and high standards and expectations for all. Each year, the students at RHS vote on the staff member who they believe best embodies Mrs. Cothran’s commitment to education, loyalty and dedication to RHS, and positive impact on students.
BHS National Honor Society
On May 26, the Brevard High School chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 14 new members. The students were selected based upon their excellent character, demonstrated leadership, and community service. These outstanding individuals will join current members for the 2010-2011 year in completing individual service projects and tutoring throughout the community. This year's inductees are Jennifer Badger, Jessica Bamford, Jamie Barnes, Jane Margaret Bell, Rachel Berezik, Hannah Bingle, Paul Connell, Alex Goden, Lily Jones-Herbst, Wesley Holland, Wesley Kreigsman, Rodrigo Martinez, Elisabeth Moore, and Jordan Silvia.
TCHES Career Day
The T.C. Henderson Elementary School Career Day on June 11 was a big hit. Students saw fascinating demonstrations of jobs they might consider in the not so distant future. Presenters included Olympia Skovol, author; Kim Green, banker with United Community Bank; Officers Sizemore, Rory, and Bonnie from the County K-9 unit; Pete Mockridge, ceramic artist from Mud Dabbers; and John Wayne Hardison, arborist from High Country Tree Services. Mr. Mockridge demonstrated a potter's wheel in action and let students handle clay as it was shaped. Mr. Green discussed banking and played a money game with small groups competing to reach $1. Ms. Skovol talked about publishing and the journey she made to create a book from beginning to end. Mr. Hardison climbed trees and spoke of safety requirements and the importance of taking care of our forests. Officer Sizemore showed how his fellow K-9 officers (Rory and Bonnie) are used to find missing people and illegal substances. The students had a wonderful time interacting with these community presenters. Our schools are fortunate to have such great role models for students.
PFES Second Graders Show Their Patriotism
Second grade students in Carrie Norris' class at PFES have learned what it means to be patriotic. During the school year, students had the opportunity to send letters to active military personnel, meet soldiers, learn to name the 50 states alphabetically, and researched interesting facts about the United States. The students had a chance to showcase their knowledge on June 11 when they performed a Memorial/Flag Day program for parents, grandparents and community veterans. The second graders thanked all of the brave men and women who fight for our country every day. There is no doubt these young people will look at the American flag and understand the values and sacrifice that it represents.
