RHS Spanish Students Score Well

Students from Rosman High School earned one bronze placement along with six honorable mentions on the 2008 National Spanish Examinations.  The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6-12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

“Attaining any placement or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with well over 106,000 students participating in 2008.”

This is the first year for Rosman High School to participate; 23 students volunteered to take the exam.  The students receiving honorable mention awards are:  Dakota Guffey, Drew Jamerson, Juan Mundo-Mendez, Andrea Owen, Fallon Newell, and Loran Wilson.  Bo Lance received a bronze placement.  Spanish teachers at Rosman High School are Julie Queen and Linda Carrillo.

RES Media Center Receives “We The People” Recognition

Rosman Elementary School’s Media Center is one of 3,000 libraries across the country selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA) to receive free hardcover editions of classic books and primary source materials from the “We the People Bookshelf.”  The “We the People Bookshelf” project is a national grant initiative that provides classic children’s literature to schools and public libraries.  The award is part of the NEH’s “We the People” initiative, which supports projects that strengthen the teaching, study, and understanding of American history and culture.

The theme of this year’s Bookshelf is “Created Equal.”  The RES Media Center received a set of 21 books on this theme (including Spanish translations of four of the titles), posters, bookmarks, bookplates from the NEH and the ALA, “History in a Box” resource materials on Abraham Lincoln from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and access to online planning and promotional materials.  RES media specialist, Kelly Brannock, submitted the application for the award.

T. C. Henderson Relay for Life

T. C. Henderson Elementary School completed its first year of participation in "Relay for Life," complete with a Relay for Life Team.  Students collected coins, staff sold luminaries, and the school sold pictures and sought corporate sponsorship.  Coach Mick Galloway and Teresa Lawlis headed up this effort.

The school’s goal was to raise $3,000.  Principal Tony Meachum and Coach Galloway told students that if they met that goal, the two of them would "Camp Out Against Cancer" by spending the night on the school roof.  The school did not raise $3,000--they raised approximately $8,500!  Tony Meachum said, “Thus we camped out on Friday night, May 2.  It was a beautiful evening!”

The school’s Relay for Life Team also participated in the county-wide "Cruisin’ for a Cure" beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, and finishing up at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, at the Transylvania County Recreation Center.  The team had someone walking all night to symbolize their support of efforts to stamp out cancer.
