School Social Workers’ Week

Governor Michael Easley has proclaimed the week of March 4-10, 2007, School Social Workers’ Week in North Carolina in observance of the outstanding contributions made by the more than 600 school social workers across the state.  School social workers are specialists at linking families, schools, and community services, and help students build strong social skills and learn appropriate ways to resolve conflicts.  They work with students and families to address barriers to learning, and provide consultation to teachers and administrators in classroom management.  School social workers also address the needs of students with disabilities and work to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment.

Regional Math/Science Fair

Patrick Frady, a third grader in Kathy Beddingfield’s class at Pisgah Forest Elementary School, won first place in the Western Region Elementary Math/Science Fair at Western Carolina University.  He will go to Raleigh to compete for state honors on March 24.

National Child Nutrition Month

March is National Child Nutrition Month.  Many activities will take place throughout the month to encourage students and families to focus on nutrition and healthy food choices.

The State Board of Education recently revised its Strategic Plan.  A copy is attached.  The Transylvania County School Strategic Plan needs to be aligned to these new priorities.  While some goals transfer easily, others present a challenge (see attached draft).  The District Leadership team, Student Advisory Council, Superintendent’s Communication Council, and Parent Advisory Council each have been asked for input on this conversion.

David Sutton will share the SBOE plan and ask for the Board’s input on our new plan.  Approval of the revised TCS Strategic Plan will be requested at the next regular meeting.
