USDA Foods Program Review

On December 4, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services conducted a field review of the USDA Commodity Foods Program administered by Transylvania County Schools.  The review indicates that TCS is in compliance with USDA and NCDA&CS regulations and policies, and no discrepancies were noted.

Immunization Audit

Recently the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services conducted an immunization audit at T. C. Henderson Elementary School.  These audits are required by both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the State of North Carolina to ensure that children are protected against vaccine preventable diseases and that state law is being followed as it relates to immunization requirements.  Of the 34 immunization records of kindergarten children audited at TCH, all 34 (100%) were found to be in compliance with the North Carolina immunization law.

Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Education Award

The Transylvania Excellence in Education/Chamber of Commerce Award will be presented to Davidson River School teacher, Laura Smith, at the Chamber’s annual gala on January 13.  Ms. Smith received the $300 award to help fund her project, “Entrepreneurship Live,” which aims to teach students to work in ways that support the nature of the American economy.  Her students will open and operate a school store, which in addition to teaching them skills they can use after graduation, will also give them a better understanding of mathematical and scientific principles.   Last year’s Chamber Award was given to Alan and Sarah Justice of RHS for their digital storytelling project on Carl Sandburg.

RHS and RMS Christmas Care

RHS Student Council collected 250 cans of food for the Rosman food pantry at Rosman Methodist Church.  Rosman Middle and High Schools donated over 250 shoeboxes of gifts to Operation Christmas Child.  Members of the Club of International Languages donated over 300 hours of time to help in the warehouse.

BES and TCH Support Ronald McDonald House

A partnership among the students, parents and family members from Brevard Elementary School, T. C. Henderson Elementary School, and Centura Bank to collect aluminum can tabs has raised $4,752 as of Christmas.  All the money goes to the Ronald McDonald House.  Don Hogsed’s class at BES spearheaded the project.  He comments, “It is amazing to see the response, and now to know some of our ‘very own’ that have been helped by the Ronald McDonald House.  What started as a class project grew into a school project and has now become a community project.”
